Language, culture and communication studies
In an increasingly international work life, versatile language and communication skills are a competitive edge. After completing language and communication studies at the University of Applied Sciences, students are well-equipped to deal with communication situations at work. You can also start studying a new language at SeAMK. A basic language course provides a good basis for further language development, for example during a mobility or traineeship in a country where the target language is spoken.
Communication studies
Good written and spoken communication skills are required in almost every field of work. Many jobs involve demanding communication situations such as project communication, teamwork, customer service, reporting, presentations, scientific writing, factual writing and e-mail or web communication. Communication studies at SeAMK include group communication, presentations and interpersonal skills. In communication courses, written communication skills needed in working life will be honed.
Swedish and English studies
All degree programmes include professional language studies in the second national language (Swedish) and English. The vocational language courses cover topics such as job search, written communication (e.g. reporting and business communication), company and product presentations and customer service situations. The courses provide practice in both spoken and written language skills. Professional language courses prepare students for working in an international work environment.
Elective language studies
In addition to the communication, Swedish and English studies included in the degree programmes, SeAMK also offers elective language and communication studies. You can find the free choice of studies here.
In addition to the communication, Swedish and English courses, there are the following beginner’s courses:
- Spanish 1, 2, 3
- French 1, 2
- German 1, 2, 3
- Work Life German
- Portuguese 1, 2
- Russian 1, 2, 3
- Finnish Language and Culture (for mobility students)
In addition to the basic courses (e.g. Spanish 1/French 1/German 1/Russian 1), at least one advanced course (Spanish 2/French 2/German 2/Russian 2) is recommended to develop language skills to a level that is useful in everyday communication situations.
Elective courses are generally held on Thursdays starting at 14.15. Some classes may be held on Tuesdays at 14.15 or at other times as indicated.
Language studies at other universities
SeAMK’s degree students can also take language courses from other universities.
Languages not offered at SeAMK can also be studied at one’s own expense at Adult Education Centre. Students should always check in advance with their study counsellor whether a course taken elsewhere can be accepted at SeAMK.
Languages also for Open University students
Students of Open University of Applied Sciences can also participate in the majority of elective language and communication courses. To register as an open student, click here.
