Sustainable and responsible food production

We study sustainability and responsibility especially from the perspective of agricultural production. We also study the role of peatlands in the food chain and develop sustainable forms of land use. Our research group offers companies a good partner to develop smart and cost-effective food chain operating models. In our operations, we seek solutions from circular economy business models, for example. Our research group consists of more than 20 experts and the total project budget is approximately EUR 4 million.

Research areas

  • Resource efficiency and productivity
    • e.g. circular economy, renewable energy, nutrient recycling, profitability
  • Environmental footprint of food production and sustainable food choices
    • e.g. carbon-neutral production methods and adaptation to climate change, water protection, biodiversity, food waste
  • Soils and land use
    • e.g. Soil health, carbon sequestration, peatlands
  • Smart food production
    • e.g. smart digi, agrotechnology, efficient use of data

Ongoing projects

  • Bridging the digital divide and addressing the need of Rural Communities with Cost-effective and Environmental-Friendly Connectivity Solutions (COMMECT)
  •  Sustainable and Responsible Food Province
  •  Competent farmer
  •  Rewilding cut-over peatlands back to peatland forests (TUPSU)
  •  Hydrogen economy in the food system (VEP)
