Bachelor of Hospitality Management - A new degree programme for SeAMK
Exciting news! SeAMK is expanding its studies by introducing a new English degree programme. The Bachelor of Hospitality Management degree programme is based on the existing programme taught in Finnish. It is set to start in the upcoming autumn semester of 2025, with the application period scheduled to begin in January 2025. We had the opportunity to ask Ilkka Latomäki, a teacher on the planning team for this new bachelor’s degree, some questions.
Can you give us some hints about this new degree programme?
This degree programme is with a strong focus on learning by doing and co-operation with companies. It’s a comprehensive hospitality management programme where students can study service development and tourism, primarily emphasising business management and nutrition. This programme is also unique because it’s one of the few places in the country where you can study nutrition as part of a hospitality management degree.
What are the basic facts of this programme?
The programme spans 210 ECTS credits and takes approximately 3.5 years to complete. It’s designed to provide students with a robust hospitality and food service management foundation, preparing them for various roles in the industry.
When will it officially begin?
The programme will begin in the autumn of 2025. However, students can study remotely during the first semester if needed due to potential delays in visa processing and bureaucracy.
Who should apply?
It’s ideal for those who want to work in food and restaurant management, be involved in nutrition services, collaborate with entrepreneurs, or pursue a career in hospitality management. Whether you have experience in the industry or are just starting, everyone is welcome to apply.
A degree in hospitality management offers a unique combination of learning about food and the business behind it, with excellent career prospects upon graduation.
Do you have any words for people who are interested in this programme?
The food culture constantly evolves, and there’s a growing demand for international culinary experiences, especially in this region of Finland. People are looking for something new and exciting. SeAMK provides a professional-level kitchen where students can express their creativity. The best part is you don’t need prior cooking experience. Everything is taught during the classes. Depending on your focus, you can spend more or less time in the kitchen, allowing for flexibility and creativity.
Where can people find the details to apply for it?
Instructions for applying can be found on the Studyinfo website and SeAMK’s official webpage. The application process will begin in January 2025, aligning with the application dates for all international programmes.
What can you say about Seinäjoki as a student city?
Seinäjoki is a vibrant and lively city, especially for its size. The student union is very active and organises events regularly. The cost of living here is reasonable, and student well-being is a priority at the school. The city’s size is just right. You can get around relatively quickly, even by bike.
Additionally, there is a labour shortage in the region’s restaurant sector, which means students have excellent employment opportunities.
We want to thank Ilkka Latomäki for giving us an early glimpse into the new and exciting addition to SeAMK’s bachelor degree programsmes.
